How is Your Job?

Rammage emailed:

Guess what is The Best Job in this country :-)

Be sure to note how Money picked the best jobs, explained here.

Teaching didn't exactly make the rankings, despite how cushy the general public knows it to be*. But I could always jump back to physical science as a career, or (as Rammage noted) college professor came in #2. The rigors of academia!

Where is the asterisk leading?

Most of the people I have known who were willing to discuss how cushy an entire industry is, didn't actually know anything about what the industry does. And they usually aren't exactly digging ditches 60 hours a week themselves. People tend to spout off a little too freely imho.

So do teachers have cushy jobs? Well, it isn't too bad. We do very little physical labor. We get summers off. We have a captive audience to preach to. But there are down sides to it depending on what age one teaches, and what subject, and which school - a bad administration can make a school a nightmare. How many criminals do you want to interact with on a given day? How little respect do you think the little thugs and their parents and your own boss could have for you?

In other words, why didn't teachers make the rankings, if it's so cushy?

I happen to have a pretty fun and cushy job, personally. I know teachers who don't. And on their behalf, I resent when they are written off as spoiled whiners by some air-conditioned computer jockey who hasn't been in a classroom since graduation.

Thanks for taking the bait. :)
